Serious crash closes Highway 99 in Surrey

One driver was travelling the wrong direction into oncoming traffic at the time, cops say

A collision on Highway 99 near Highway 91 in Surrey has sent a driver to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries; it also caused the closure of the southeast-bound lanes of Highway 99 for several hours.

Surrey RCMP received a call at about 4:16 a.m. Sunday (April 28) about a two-vehicle collision in the southeast-bound lanes of Highway 99, 50 metres east of the Highway 91 junction, a press release says. It happened when a late-model Ford sedan was travelling the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

The Ford struck a Mercedes sedan travelling southeast on Highway 99, with “significant damage” reported to both vehicles. The Ford driver, who police report to be a 68-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with injuries described as “possibly life-threatening.”

The driver and passenger of the Mercedes were also taken to hospital, but with their injuries described as “minor.”

The release notes the incident is still under investigation, but alcohol and a pre-existing medical condition are believed to be contributing factors.

The southeast-bound lanes of Highway 99 were closed at the Highway 91 junction for several hours, but RCMP reported the highway re-opened shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday, after initial investigation into the collision, thanking the motoring public for their patience.
