The BC SPCA says officers were pepper-sprayed while executing the seizure of 25 animals in Mission Thursday.
SPCA’s general manager for community relations Lorie Chortyk says the animals seized included sick and neglected pigs, goats, horses, turkeys and a llama.
The animals were emaciated, had parasites and lice, skin and eye conditions, and other injuries, she said.
When officers began seizing the animals, Chortyk says the owner of the animals sprayed the officers as well as Mounties that were there. The man was arrested.
Chortyk said it’s not uncommon for seizures to become heated.
“It doesn’t happen on every visit, but we do 10,000 investigations a year.”
The SPCA has recommended charges of animal cruelty and the animals are being cared for at the Surrey Branch of the BC SPCA, in the society’s Good Shepherd large animal barn.
