Derek DICKSON

Derek Malcolm Dickson passed away peacefully December 18, 2014 at the age of 90 years. He was born October 20, 1924 in Putney, London, England, the third son of William and Doris (Saunders) Dickson. As a family, they immigrated to Canada when Derek was 3 years old, first living in Regina and then moving to Abbotsford when he was 9 years old. He grew up on the family farm on Emerson Rd. in an era when he could do such things as explore and play on the big old rock that remains to this day on the south side of Sevenoaks Mall or walk his pet goat along the train trestle by Mill Lake or with friends hop aboard the back of the Gosling truck and head to Birch Bay for the day. On August 4, 1950, Derek married Jean Reid and after a short time on Queen St., they moved and built their home on Foy St. where they remained for the next 62 years. Derek worked for Buckerfields for 25 years, first as a hired hand on the Sumas Prairie farm and then as a feed truck driver while at the same time maintaining his dairy farm with his wife’s help. In 1973, due to his health, Derek retired and sold the dairy farm and began a routine of new pastimes from filling in the morning news crossword, reading a new book, visiting his elderly mother-in-law for morning tea, tending a small flock of sheep and vegetable garden and watching his first grandson, Patrick, grow up next door to them. Derek also took up the adventure of boating and soon found Mayne Island as his new recreational destination, where he built a cabin the family enjoyed for many years. He also enjoyed travelling with Jean to places such as Great Britain and as far away as the Panama Canal. Derek is survived by his wife Jean and his children, Inez (Dickie), Ellis (Willie), Malcolm (Monica), and Kirk. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Patrick Ellis (Nikki), Matthew (Angela), Daniel (Kylie), Nicole Davey (Chris), James, and Ashley Dickson as well as many nieces and nephews. Derek is survived by his brother Peter and his brother Tom’s wife, Elviera. Derek was predeceased by Tom and his grandson Drew Dickson. Derek’s easy going disposition served him well and his warm welcome and visits will be missed by his loved ones. The family would like to thank the staff at Menno Hospital for their dedication and care for Derek in the final months of his life. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Derek, may do so to the Abbotsford Shriners or Menno Hospital. A celebration of Derek’s life will be held Saturday, January 3, 11:00 am at the Masonic Hall on Pine St., Abbotsford.
