Helen Friesen was born Helena Martens on April 28, 1915 near Warman, SK. As 1 of 11 children, Helen worked very hard through her childhood to help support her family. She had a great love for learning, and though she did not have the opportunity to complete her education, she did what she could by correspondence and eventually achieved her dream of becoming a nurse. Her career lasted only 3 ½ years, but it brought her great joy. Helen married Abe Friesen on Oct 5, 1946, and they moved to British Columbia shortly thereafter. They had 4 children together, raised 1 granddaughter, and served faithfully in their church and community. After Abe died, Helen continued to work tirelessly to help those in need. She was an avid canner, baker, seamstress, and gardener, and enjoyed creating beautiful afghans and patchwork quilts for her family. Most of all, she was a strong Christian woman, faithful and devoted to her Creator. She was predeceased by her husband Abe, her daughter Darlene and son-in-law Tom, and 9 sisters and brothers. She will be dearly missed by all she leaves behind: her 104-year-old sister Jesse, daughter Vivian (Gerald) Froese, son Jim (Chris) Friesen, son Paul (Anna-Marie) Friesen and granddaughter Sharon (Colin) Reimer. She also leaves behind 11 additional grandchildren and 14½ great grandchildren. Her funeral will be held at Clearbrook MB Church on Monday, May 27th at 10:45 am. Donations will be collected for Mission to Children.
