November 19, 1924 - January 28, 2022
After a life well lived, at 97 years old, James Douglas Musgrave of Mission, British Columbia, passed away on January 28th, 2022 surrounded by family.
Jim, as he was known to friends and family, was born in Vancouver, BC to James (Harry) and Edith Musgrave on November 19, 1924.
Growing up during the challenging times of the GreatDepression including time as a child with his family in Stettler, Alberta he learned to value hard work, determination, and a positive outlook on life. These were traits that he embodied throughout his life, from his service in the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) during World War Two, through to his career at Mission Secondary primarily as a woodwork teacher and during retirement while guiding his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren through their various endeavours.
In addition to enjoying talks with family and friends about financial markets, politics and history, there was nothing at a house or on an automobile that Jim (lovingly called Papa or Pops by his grandchildren) couldn't seem to fix.
He was involved in many such projects for his entire family, and enjoyed the challenges of completing a job and also enjoyed the savings versus having to outsource what he knew he could do on his own.
After proudly volunteering to serve Canada overseas at the young age of 17, he returned home to start a post-war life in the country he loved. In 1948 Jim moved to Mission, BC from Vancouver where he would spend the next 74 years.
As an avid sportsman, Jim spent countless days and weeks hunting and fishing throughout all corners of BC, but his favourite place remained his home, where his family often gathered to celebrate special occasions with he and his wife, Helen.
Jim was an active member of the Mission community and in addition to his role as an educator, he also served at various times as President of the Mission Legion, President of the Mission Rod and Gun Club, Director of the Pleasant View Housing Society and as a soccer coach at Mission Secondary.
Jim was predeceased by his wife Helen Musgrave and is survived by his children Glen (Julie) Musgrave, Jean (Carey) Vivian, Beverley (Ken) Kirby, grandchildren Bryan (Laura) Slusarchuk, Jamie (Angie) Slusarchuk, Ginny (Sean) Martin, Jason (Laura) Kirby, Gabriel Musgrave and Grady Musgrave as well as 8 great-grandchildren and numerous friends and relatives.
