Luyken leads Cascades to nationals

Former Mission Secondary student posts 29 points in win over Alberta Pandas

Mission Secondary grad Aieisha Luyken is making the most of her final season of eligibility with UFV women’s basketball team.

Luyken, a fifth-year point guard, was named a Canada West second team all-star last week after averaging 10.7 points per game and notching a team-high 90 assists during the 2013-14 regular season.

She followed that up by leading the UFV Cascades to an upset victory over the Alberta Pandas in the Canada West semifinals last Friday in Edmonton. Luyken racked up 29 points, accounting for almost half of the Cascades’ scoring in a 66-56 victory, which clinched the program’s second consecutive berth to the CIS national championship.

UFV, which dropped a 67-56 decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies in the Canada West final, open the nationals in Windsor, Ont. on Friday versus the McGill Marlets at 5 p.m. Pacific time. The tourney will be webcast live at CIS-SIC.tv.
