Mission athletes ready for BC Winter Games in Vernon

Eight athletes two coaches in various sports to represent Mission at BC Winter Games this weekend

Mission will be well represented at the BC Winter Games in Vernon this weekend from March 23-26.

Eight athletes and two coaches from Mission are set to participate in the four-day event.

Jade Gilmore and Ethan Coreau will hit the slopes in alpine skiing, Josiah Curwen will compete in archery, Rebecca Campbell and Kohen Ikeda will participate in artistic gymnastics, Lily Crondahl will take the ice in figure skating, Jackson Hillman will battle in judo, and Lachlan Sandford will play wheelchair basketball.

Meanwhile, Linda Price is the head coach of the Fraser Valley (Zone 3) archery team and Emmaleah Bryan is an assistant coach with the alpine skiing team.

Gilmore and Coreau, members at Sasquatch Mountain Resort, qualified for the BC Winter Games in Whistler on Jan. 13. The pair will compete at SilverStar Mountain Resort on Friday (March 24) with the the women’s and men’s slalom and Saturday (March 25) with the giant slalom.

“I’m excited to be participating in the BC Winter Games, and to meet more ski racers from around the province that are my age,” Gilmore said.

Price will coach Curwen in archery over a three days of competition at Vernon Secondary School with the medal rounds scheduled for Sunday (March 26).

In artistic gymnastics, Campbell and Ikeda have the team and all around competition on Friday and apparatus competitions on Saturday. Figure skating and judo will start on Thursday (March 23) for Crondahl and Hillman.

Sandford and the Fraser Valley (Zone 3) wheelchair basketball team will hit the hardwood with a pair of matchups on Friday against Thompson-Okanagan and Vancouver Coastal. On Saturday, the squad will match up with Vancouver Island-Central Coast and Cariboo-North East before the playoff round starts in the evening.

The BC Winter Games were originally scheduled to take place in February of 2022 before organizers decided to postpone to 2023 due to factors such as the pandemic, flooding and wildfires in many parts of the province.

The opening ceremony is slated for Thursday at 7 p.m. with competitions running from Friday through to noon on Sunday.
