It was a hard-fought battle in Coquitlam, but the Mission Midget C boys lacrosse team came out of it with gold.
The team was 1-1 in pool play, and had to beat Cowichan Valley in their last pool game in order to advance to the medal round. The game was tied at the end of regulation time, and finally in the second overtime period, Austin Hardy scored for the victory and the team advanced to the medal round.
Mission then crossed over to play Williams Lake in the semi-final match, and in a bit of deja vu, the game was tied at three a piece, and overtime was needed to decide the winner. Mission emerged victorious again, 5-3.
The Midget Cs then played Port Coquitlam on July 24 in the gold medal match. Mission has met Poco numerous times in league play, and it has always been a close battle. The competitive game saw great goaltending from Jacob Planek in Mission’s net. The match was tied 5-5, and again the team had to put in the extra effort in overtime.
After the first overtime period the score balanced at six each, but in the sixth minute of the second sudden victory overtime, Mission’s Cody Felgnar snagged a pass from Terrell Chenery who blasted it home for the local win.
