Local speed skaters ended off the season on a high note late last month.

Mission-based speed skaters travelled to Manitoba to compete in the Can-West Championships on March 19 and 20.

The event drew the best speed skaters from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories, and a trio of Mission athletes excelled.

Janie Green picked up first overall in the 14-year-old girls division, winning two gold and two silver medals. Mission's Annabelle Green finished second in the 12-year-old girls division, with two silver medals, while Jared Bolland placed third overall in the 12-year-old boys division with silver medals in the 200 and 400 metres races.

The trio also fared well at the 2016 Penticton BC Winter Games in February, with Janie winning six gold medals; Annabelle winning one gold, one silver and three bronze; and Bolland earning a bronze.

The Greens and Bolland qualified for the Can-West Championships after winning their respective divisions at the BC short track championships earlier in March.
