Combat sports broadcasting legend Mauro Ranallo continues bipolar fight on World Mental Health Day

Abbotsford-born combat sports commentator Mauro Ranallo has seen it all in his spectacular career.

The W.J. Mouat grad called the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor boxing bout in 2017, he’s been cage side and ring side for some of the biggest events in pro wrestling and mixed martial arts and has received critical praise for the energy he brings to every telecast.

But, he’s also fighting an on-going battle with bipolar disorder, and in recent years has become a strong mental health advocate.

Yesterday (Oct. 10) was World Mental Heath Day, an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. The day has been celebrated since 1992, and the 2019 theme was mental health promotion and suicide prevention.

Ranallo tweeted out a link to his 2018 SHOWTIME documentary Bipolar Rock ‘N’ Roller, which highlighted the raw and real account of his decades-long struggle with bipolar disorder. Ranallo was diagnosed with the mental illness in 1989.
