The closure of Highway 7 to civilian traffic has forced the closure of the Dewdney and Deroche elementary schools today, Nov. 24.
The route is only open to supply trucks, public transit and school buses, but not civilian vehicles, said Superintendent Angus Wilson in a letter to parents sent yesterday evening, Nov. 23.
“This means our staff living anywhere from Chilliwack to Dewdney will be unable to access worksites,” he said. “We will get this resolved tomorrow … I apologize for the short notice.”
Wilson said he had several emergency meetings with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transportation but was unable to work to stop the closures.
He is meeting with them again this morning to work on potential resolutions.
Parents headed to Hatzic Middle School or Hatzic Elementary will need to use backstreets to get to these schools due to the closures, Wilson said.
