The Mission Racers held their final practice of the season earlier this month after a successful year for a pair of skaters.

Nora Calder and Samaira Nemeth competed at the BC Winter Games in Quesnel and Calder also earned a spot at the Youth Short Track Championships in Alberta last weekend (March 22-24).

At the Winter Games, Calder and Nemeth competed in four events each for the Fraser Valley squad in the U14 Female category. Calder had her best finish in the 400-metre event, placing eighth. Meanwhile, Nemeth’s top finish was in the 800-metre, placing 21st. Both skaters achieved new personal best times in multiple distances.

Calder earned a spot on Team BC at the Youth Short Track Championships in Medicine Hat by placing well at the BC Short Track Championships in Abbotsford earlier in March. She was one of six girls in her age group to earn a spot on Team BC for the competition.

Calder didn’t medal at the national tournament in Alberta but set new personal best times in two distances.

“I love nationals because it’s fun meeting speed skaters from all over Canada,” Calder said.

The Mission Skaters’ season will start up again in September.
